Yamunotri

Tour My India June 12, 2026 5 min read

Yamunotri, the westernmost shrine of the Chota Char Dham, is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, daughter of Surya, the Sun God, and sister of Yama, the God of Death. It is believed that bathing in the Yamuna's sacred waters protects devotees from an untimely or painful death. Located at about 3,293 metres in the Uttarkashi district, Yamunotri is traditionally the first stop of the Char Dham Yatra.

The journey to Yamunotri involves a scenic 5–6 kilometre trek from Janki Chatti, winding through dense forests, waterfalls, and dramatic mountain views. Ponies, palanquins, and porters are readily available for those who prefer assistance. The actual source of the Yamuna lies at the frozen Champasar Glacier near Kalind Parvat, but the temple at Yamunotri serves as the place of worship.

The temple, originally built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal, houses a black marble idol of the goddess. The most fascinating ritual here involves the Surya Kund, a natural hot spring where pilgrims cook rice and potatoes tied in muslin cloth — the cooked offering is taken home as prasad. Nearby, the Divya Shila, a sacred rock pillar, is worshipped before entering the temple.

Yamunotri opens on Akshaya Tritiya and closes on Yama Dwitiya (Bhai Dooj). Summer temperatures remain pleasant during the day but drop sharply at night, so warm clothing is essential. The nearest major towns for accommodation are Barkot and Janki Chatti.

The contrast of icy river waters and boiling thermal springs makes Yamunotri a place of natural wonder and deep spirituality. Begin your Char Dham journey on a divine note — plan your Yamunotri yatra with UttarakhandTours.in.
