A smooth Char Dham Yatra begins long before you reach the mountains. Here's everything you need to plan India's most sacred Himalayan pilgrimage.
Registration first: The Uttarakhand government has made biometric/online registration mandatory for all Char Dham pilgrims. Register on the official tourist care portal or app well in advance, as daily darshan slots at each shrine are capped during peak season. Carry your registration confirmation and a government ID throughout the yatra.
Route and duration: The traditional sequence runs west to east — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath. A complete circuit by road from Haridwar takes 10–12 days. Short on time? Do the Do Dham (Kedarnath–Badrinath) in 5–6 days, or opt for helicopter packages covering all four shrines in 4–5 days from Dehradun.
Getting there: Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airhub; Haridwar and Rishikesh are the main rail and road bases. Hire experienced hill drivers — mountain roads demand skill, and night driving is prohibited on many stretches.
Health preparation: Kedarnath (3,583 m) and the others sit at serious altitudes. Begin morning walks weeks before, consult your doctor if you have heart or respiratory conditions, and carry prescribed medicines. Health screening points operate along the Kedarnath trail; don't skip them. Ascend slowly and stay hydrated.
Packing essentials: Warm layers (even in June), rain poncho, sturdy walking shoes, torch, power bank, dry fruits, water bottle, and cash — ATMs are scarce beyond major towns.
Book accommodation in advance at Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi, and Joshimath/Pipalkoti. Or simply let UttarakhandTours.in handle everything — registration support, hotels, transport, and helicopter bookings — for a worry-free yatra.
