Rishikesh: India's Rafting Capital
White-water rafting on the Ganges in Rishikesh is one of India's top adventure experiences. The river descends from the Himalayas creating rapids ranging from Grade 1 (gentle) to Grade 5 (extreme), all within a stunning valley flanked by forested hills and ancient temples.
The Three Main Routes
1. Brahmapuri to Rishikesh (9 km) — Grade 1-2
Best for: Families, children, first-timers.
Duration: 1.5–2 hours.
Price: ₹800–1,200 per person.
A gentle, scenic float with mild rapids. Perfect introduction to rafting — you'll paddle through calm stretches with views of ashrams, suspension bridges and the Ganga Aarti ghats. Safe for children above 10 and non-swimmers (life jackets mandatory).
2. Shivpuri to Rishikesh (16 km) — Grade 3-4
Best for: Most popular route, balanced thrill and fun.
Duration: 3–4 hours.
Price: ₹1,500–2,500 per person.
This is the classic Rishikesh rafting experience. Major rapids include Roller Coaster, Golf Course, Club House and Double Trouble. The 16 km stretch gives you enough time to enjoy both adrenaline-pumping rapids and calm stretches for cliff jumping and body surfing.
3. Marine Drive / Kaudiyala to Rishikesh (36 km) — Grade 4-5
Best for: Experienced rafters seeking extreme adventure.
Duration: Full day (6–7 hours).
Price: ₹3,000–5,000 per person.
The ultimate Ganges rafting route with rapids named The Wall, Three Blind Mice, Crossfire and Daniel's Dip. Grade 5 rapids are powerful — previous rafting experience is strongly recommended. This route includes a riverside lunch break.
Best Season for Rafting
September to June is the official rafting season. October–November offers the best combination of pleasant weather and exciting water levels. Rafting is suspended during July–August monsoon when the Ganges swells dangerously.
