Bugyals — high-altitude alpine meadows — are Uttarakhand's signature landscapes, and Dayara Bugyal is arguably the most beautiful of them all. Sprawled across 28 square kilometres between 10,000 and 12,000 feet in the Uttarkashi district, these undulating grasslands transform with the seasons: emerald green dotted with wildflowers in summer, golden in autumn, and a flawless white snowfield in winter.
The trek begins from Raithal or Barsu village, around 180 km from Dehradun. The trail climbs gently through dense oak and rhododendron forests, past the gushing streams and shepherd huts, before the forest dramatically gives way to the open meadows. The first sight of Dayara — endless green or white rolling toward snow giants — is breathtaking.
From the meadows, the panorama includes Mt. Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, Srikanth, Draupadi Ka Danda, and the Gangotri range. The Bakaria Top viewpoint offers the finest sunrise vistas. In winter, Dayara becomes a paradise for snow lovers, with waist-deep powder and gentle slopes once considered for ski development.
This trek is one of the easiest entries into Himalayan trekking — about 21 km over 4 days with gradual ascents, perfect for families, beginners, and children above eight. The villages of Raithal and Barsu themselves charm visitors with traditional Garhwali wooden architecture and warm homestay hospitality.
Don't miss the Butter Festival (Anduri Utsav) in August, when local herders celebrate in the meadows by playing Holi with milk and butter — a unique cultural spectacle. Every season is trekking season at Dayara. Plan your Dayara Bugyal escape with UttarakhandTours.in for an effortless first Himalayan adventure.
