About Panch Kedar
The Panch Kedar are five ancient temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, scattered across the high Garhwal Himalayas, each enshrining a different part of the divine bull (Nandi) in which Shiva is said to have disappeared. The five are: Kedarnath (3,583 m — the hump, main temple), Tungnath (3,680 m — arm, world's highest Shiva temple), Rudranath (2,286 m — face, buried in forest), Madhyamaheshwar (3,497 m — navel, outstanding meadow setting), and Kalpeshwar (2,200 m — matted locks, accessible by road). Each requires a separate trek and together form one of the most challenging and rewarding pilgrimage circuits in India.
Places to See
• Kedarnath Temple (3,583 m, hump — main Jyotirlinga, see separate entry)
• Tungnath Temple (3,680 m, arm — world's highest Shiva temple, 3.5 km trek from Chopta)
• Rudranath Temple (2,286 m, face — deep forest, 20 km trek from Sari village, extremely atmospheric)
• Madhyamaheshwar Temple (3,497 m, navel — magnificent meadow setting, 24 km trek from Ransi)
• Kalpeshwar Temple (2,200 m, matted locks — only Panch Kedar accessible by road year-round, in Urgam valley)
Best Time
Full Panch Kedar circuit: May–June and September–October only (4 temples require high-altitude trekking). Kalpeshwar: year-round. Plan 12–15 days for the complete circuit; most pilgrims focus on 2–3 temples per visit.
How to Reach
Base: Rishikesh. Each temple requires a separate road approach and trek. Rudranath and Madhyamaheshwar are the most challenging and require 2-day treks each. Kedarnath has helicopter access. Tungnath is 3.5 km from Chopta.
Things to Do
• Complete Panch Kedar circuit (12–15 days)
• Tungnath + Chandrashila summit (3.5 km + 1.5 km, most popular, see Trekking section)
• Rudranath forest trek (20 km, most atmospheric)
• Madhyamaheshwar meadow trek (24 km, finest meadow setting)
• Kalpeshwar road trip (Urgam Valley)
Tips
Rudranath is the most extraordinary of the Panch Kedar — a solitary stone temple face-deity buried in alpine forest, with very few visitors. Madhyamaheshwar meadow (3,497 m) rivals any bugyal in India. Do not attempt the Rudranath and Madhyamaheshwar treks without a certified guide from Ukhimath or Ransi.
