About Uttarkashi (Spiritual)
Uttarkashi — 'the northern Kashi' — is both the main gateway to the Gangotri Char Dham and an important spiritual centre in its own right. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple here is dedicated to the same deity as Varanasi's most sacred shrine. The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), one of India's premier climbing institutes, is also based here. Several significant ashrams operate in and around the town.
