About Valley of Flowers NP (Wildlife)
The Valley of Flowers National Park is as remarkable for its wildlife as for its flowers. Himalayan black bear, musk deer, Himalayan serow, snow leopard, red fox, and Himalayan blue sheep inhabit the valley and surrounding slopes. The 87 sq km park at 3,658 m in Chamoli is one of the few places in India where diverse large Himalayan mammals and extraordinary alpine flora coexist in a single protected landscape. The area around Hemkund Sahib is particularly rich in wildlife at the upper elevations.
Places to See
• Himalayan Black Bear (regularly seen in the valley — maintain safe distance)
• Musk Deer (in forest sections approaching the valley)
• Himalayan Monal (state bird, abundant)
• Rare Himalayan Butterflies (250+ species — the most diverse butterfly habitat in the Indian Himalayas)
• Snow Leopard Territory (upper slopes, camera traps present)
• Brahmakamal and Rare Alpine Flora (300+ wildflower species)
• Bhyundar Valley (buffer zone, rich in wildlife)
Best Time
Mid-July to mid-September (park open for visitors, peak wildlife activity coincides with flower bloom). Best wildlife sightings: early morning at the valley entrance at 8 AM. Closed October–June.
How to Reach
Road: Rishikesh → Joshimath → Govindghat (278 km, ~9 hrs). Trek: Govindghat → Ghangaria (13 km) → Valley entrance (3 km more). Helicopter from Govindghat to Ghangaria available.
Things to Do
• Wildlife spotting in the valley (early morning, 8 AM entry, move slowly)
• Himalayan black bear at the upper treeline
• Photography of butterflies on the flower-carpet floor
• Bhyundar Valley birdwatching
• Combine with Hemkund Sahib (6 km from Ghangaria) for the upper wildlife zone
Tips
No overnight camping inside the valley — day visits only (8 AM–5 PM). Move quietly and slowly for wildlife sightings. Black bears in the valley are generally un-aggressive but maintain a safe distance. A botanical and wildlife guide transforms the experience enormously.
