About Haridwar
Haridwar — the 'Gateway to God' — is among the holiest cities in Hinduism, the place where the Ganga, descending from the Himalaya, finally reaches the plains. One of the four sites of the great Kumbh Mela, it draws millions of pilgrims who come to bathe in the sacred river and seek liberation, giving the city an intense, perpetual devotional energy.
Its spiritual heart is Har Ki Pauri, the riverside ghat where, every evening, the spectacular Ganga Aarti unfolds — rows of priests waving great flaming lamps as bells ring and thousands of leaf-boats bearing tiny flames drift downstream, a sight that stays with every visitor.
Around the ghats rise the hilltop temples of Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi, reached by cable car, and a maze of bazaars selling everything from brassware to Ayurvedic remedies. As the gateway to Rishikesh and the Char Dham, and a centre of yoga, Ayurveda and ancient tradition, Haridwar is both a profound pilgrimage and a vivid cultural experience.
