The Panch Kedar pilgrimage is among the most ancient and spiritually profound yatras in the Garhwal Himalayas. According to legend, after the Kurukshetra War, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's blessings to atone for the sins of battle. Lord Shiva, wishing to test them, took the form of a bull and disappeared into the earth at different points — and five Shiva temples mark these spots. Kedarnath, Madmaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar together form the Panch Kedar. This journey through remote trails, alpine meadows, and ancient shrines is a test of devotion, endurance, and spiritual resolve.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Haridwar → Ukhimath
Depart Haridwar and drive through the sacred confluences of Devprayag and Rudraprayag to reach Ukhimath — the winter seat of Kedarnath Temple. Check into hotel and rest.
Day 2
Ukhimath → Gaurikund → Kedarnath Trek
Drive to Gaurikund and trek 16 km to Kedarnath. Offer prayers at this most sacred Jyotirlinga and attend the evening aarti. Overnight at Kedarnath.
Day 3
Kedarnath → Ranchola → Bantoli
Descend from Kedarnath and begin the trek toward Madmaheshwar, camping overnight at Bantoli surrounded by high-altitude meadows.
Day 4
Bantoli → Madmaheshwar (3,497 m)
Continue the trek to Madmaheshwar, passing through stunning Himalayan terrain. Offer prayers at the temple where Lord Shiva's navel (nabhi) is enshrined. The surrounding meadows offer magnificent views of Kedarnath, Neelkanth, and Chaukhamba peaks.
Day 5
Madmaheshwar → Ukhimath → Chopta
Trek back to Ukhimath and drive to Chopta — the serene base for Tungnath. Rest and acclimatise overnight.
Day 6
Chopta → Tungnath (3,680 m) → Chandrashila
Trek 4 km to Tungnath — the highest Shiva temple in the world, where Shiva's arms were found. Continue to Chandrashila summit (4,130 m) for a breathtaking 360-degree view of Himalayan peaks. Descend to Chopta.
Day 7
Chopta → Sagar → Rudranath Trek
Drive to Sagar village and trek through dense forests to Rudranath, where the face (mukh) of Lord Shiva is worshipped. The approach through rhododendron forests and alpine pastures is among the most scenic in Uttarakhand.
Day 8
Rudranath → Helang → Kalpeshwar
Descend and drive to Helang, then trek 2 km to Kalpeshwar — the only Panch Kedar accessible year-round. Here, Shiva's matted hair (jata) is worshipped. This small cave temple exudes an intimate and deeply sacred atmosphere.
Day 9
Kalpeshwar → Joshimath → Rishikesh
Drive from Joshimath to Rishikesh via the Vishnuprayag confluence. Attend evening prayers at Triveni Ghat.
Day 10
Rishikesh → Haridwar → Departure
Final morning prayers in Rishikesh, then drive to Haridwar for departure with Shiva's blessings from all five Kedar shrines.
