Chakrata

Chakrata is a remote cantonment town in Dehradun district in the Jaunsar-Bawar range with deliberately limited commercialisation due to its military character. Tiger Falls (100 m, one of Uttarakhand's tallest waterfalls), Deoban ridge (2,930 m, Swargarohini peak views), Mundali skiing (22 km), and an extraordinary Jaunsari tribal cultural landscape define the destination. The Tons river canyon below is one of Garhwal's finest river trekking and canyoning terrains.

Best Time
March–June (waterfalls at peak, forests green, Deoban accessible). October–November (golden autumn, clear Himalayan views). December–January (skiing at Mundali, snowfall). Avoid July–August (slippery trails, heavy rain).

How to Reach
Road: Dehradun → Vikasnagar → Chakrata (98 km, ~3 hrs). Delhi → Chakrata via Dehradun (~374 km, ~8 hrs). Regular buses from Dehradun ISBT (3 hrs).

Tips
Inner cantonment requires a civilian pass from the Army checkpost — carry ID. Tiger Falls trail is very slippery in monsoon — wear proper footwear. A Jaunsari tribal village guide is essential — the culture is unique and completely different from mainstream Garhwali. Deoban is best with overnight (GMVN rest house) for the dawn Swargarohini view.
