About Devprayag
Devprayag is the most sacred and visually magnificent of all the Panch Prayag confluences — the final point where the jade-green Alaknanda meets the milky-white Bhagirathi to form the Ganga, the holiest river of Hinduism. The visual drama of the two completely different-coloured rivers merging — the colours remaining distinct for hundreds of metres downstream — is one of the most powerful natural-spiritual spectacles in India. The ancient Raghunathji Temple (9th century, Lord Vishnu) stands on the rocky promontory above the exact confluence point. The community of hereditary Vedic scholars (pandas) here has maintained genealogical records of pilgrims' families for over 1,200 years — a living archive of extraordinary historical depth.
Places to See
• Devprayag Sangam (exact confluence point of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi — the birth of the Ganga, two strikingly different-coloured rivers visibly distinct even downstream)
• Raghunathji Temple (9th century, Lord Vishnu, on the cliff above the confluence — one of the oldest temples in Garhwal)
• Sacred Bathing Ghat (most auspicious for pinda daan and ancestral rites of the five Panch Prayags)
• Suspension Bridge (walk across for the finest aerial view of the confluence)
• Pandas of Devprayag (1,200-year genealogical records of pilgrims' families)
• Chandrabadni Temple (14 km, Shakti Peetha on a ridge, panoramic views)
Best Time
• Year-round. March–May (snowmelt season — both rivers at maximum flow and colour contrast, the most visually dramatic)
• September–October (post-monsoon clarity, peaceful)
• The confluence is most powerful at dawn before other visitors arrive.
How to Reach
Road: Rishikesh → Devprayag (72 km, ~2.5 hrs). Regular shared taxis from Rishikesh. Delhi → Devprayag via Haridwar–Rishikesh (~295 km, ~6 hrs).
Things to Do
• Stand at the Sangam ghat and watch the two rivers' colours merge
• Sacred bathing (most auspicious Panch Prayag ghat)
• Raghunathji Temple darshan
• Walk the suspension bridge for the aerial confluence view
• Ancestral rites with a local panda
• Chandrabadni Temple day trip (14 km, Shakti Peetha)
Tips
Arrive at Devprayag at 6 AM — the golden early light on the confluence is extraordinary and you will have the ghat to yourself. The colour contrast between the two rivers is most dramatic March–May (snowmelt) and immediately after monsoon. Devprayag pandas are genuine Vedic scholars — if you have an interest in genealogical research, they hold remarkable historical records. This is the most important of the five Panch Prayags — allow at least half a day.
