About Vishnuprayag
Vishnuprayag is the highest of the five Panch Prayag confluences, situated at 1,372 m approximately 20 km below Joshimath in Chamoli district. It is here that the Dhauliganga (descending from Niti Pass and the Tibetan plateau) merges with the Alaknanda. The confluence is visible from a suspension bridge and a small ghat below. The Vishnuprayag Hydroelectric Project has altered the flow above, but the confluence point retains its sacred character. A small temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu stands at the meeting point. The dramatic gorge setting — sheer cliffs, fast-flowing rivers, and the snow peaks of the Hathi-Ghoda range visible above — makes this one of the most visually striking of the five confluences.
Places to See
• Vishnuprayag Confluence (Dhauliganga meets Alaknanda — viewable from the suspension bridge above)
• Lord Vishnu Temple (small ancient shrine at the confluence bank)
• Suspension Bridge Viewpoint (best aerial view of the two rivers meeting)
• Joshimath Town (20 km above, full facilities — Adi Shankaracharya Math, Narasimha Temple, Auli ropeway base)
• Tapovan (8 km above Joshimath, flat valley, views of Nanda Devi)
• Helang Village (nearest settlement with basic facilities)
Best Time
Year-round as a highway stop. May–June and September–October for the most comfortable visit. Part of the Char Dham and Badrinath yatra route — most pilgrims pass through in these windows.
How to Reach
Road: Rishikesh → Joshimath (253 km, ~8 hrs) then 20 km more toward Badrinath. Vishnuprayag is on NH-58, the Char Dham Highway. Most travellers pass through en route to Badrinath.
Things to Do
• View the confluence from the suspension bridge
• Puja at the small Vishnu temple
• Photograph the two rivers' colour contrast
• Continue to Joshimath (20 km) for overnight stay and acclimatisation
• Combine with Auli ropeway from Joshimath
Tips
Vishnuprayag is typically a highway stop rather than a dedicated overnight destination — plan it as a stop on the Badrinath Char Dham route. Joshimath (20 km above) is the base for Auli skiing and the Kuari Pass trek. The confluence is best viewed from the bridge — walk to the middle for the best perspective of the merging rivers.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Vishnuprayag depends on the experience you seek.
