About Rudraprayag
Rudraprayag at 895 m is the most strategically located of the five Panch Prayags — the gateway to Kedarnath via the Mandakini valley and the junction of the roads to Kedarnath and Badrinath. It is where the Mandakini (descending from Kedarnath glacier) merges with the Alaknanda in a confluence of distinct greenish and greyish-white rivers. A Chamunda Devi Temple and Rudranath Temple stand at the confluence. The town is significant in literary history as the setting of Jim Corbett's famous 1947 book 'The Man-Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag'. Dhari Devi Temple (15 km below, guardian of Uttarakhand) and Koteshwar Mahadev Cave Temple (3 km) are nearby highlights.
Places to See
• Rudraprayag Confluence (Mandakini meets Alaknanda — the most dramatic mid-Himalayan confluence)
• Rudranath Temple and Chamunda Devi Temple (confluence bank, active worship)
• Koteshwar Mahadev Cave Temple (3 km — riverside cave Shiva temple, visually stunning)
• Dhari Devi Temple (15 km — guardian deity of Uttarakhand, idol believed to change form three times daily)

• Mandakini Valley View (upstream toward Kedarnath)

Tips
Rudraprayag is the best overnight base for the mid-Panch Prayag circuit — with Devprayag (55 km), Karnaprayag (35 km), and Nandaprayag (50 km) all easily day-trippable. Koteshwar Mahadev Cave Temple 3 km from town is extraordinarily atmospheric and sees very few visitors. Do not leave Rudraprayag without visiting it.
