About Joshimath
Joshimath at 1,875 m in Chamoli district is one of the four cardinal Maths (monasteries) established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century — his winter headquarters for the northern Himalayan region. The Narasimha Temple houses a unique self-manifested Lord Vishnu in his half-man, half-lion form, and one of its arms is progressively thinning — local tradition holds that when the arm falls off, the mountains will collapse. Joshimath is also the gateway to Auli, Badrinath, Hemkund Sahib, and the Valley of Flowers.
Places to See
• Narasimha Temple (self-manifested Narasimha deity, the thinning arm legend)
• Adi Shankaracharya Math (northern cardinal monastery, 8th century)
• Shankaracharya Cave (where Shankaracharya meditated and composed the Vivekachudamani)
• Kalp Vriksha (ancient mulberry tree, thousands of years old, in the Math compound)
• Auli Ropeway Base (4 km gondola to the ski resort)
• Tapovan (8 km, flat valley with Nanda Devi views, hot springs nearby)
• Dungagiri Temple (above town, Shakti shrine, panoramic views)
Best Time
Year-round (important base for all upper Chamoli destinations). May–June and September–October for Badrinath yatra. January–March for Auli skiing. Joshimath is the acclimatisation base before ascending to Badrinath (3,133 m) or Hemkund Sahib (4,329 m).
How to Reach
Road: Rishikesh → Joshimath (253 km, ~8 hrs). Regular buses from Rishikesh and Haridwar. Joshimath is also a stopover for Badrinath and all upper Chamoli destinations.
