About Deoria Tal
Deoria Tal is the kind of place that lodges in the memory — a small, still, high-altitude lake cradled in the hills near Sari village, famous across the Himalaya for the perfect mirror reflection of the snow-clad Chaukhamba massif that floats on its glassy surface at first light. Hindu mythology calls it a bathing place of the gods, and even names it as the pond where the Yaksha tested the Pandavas with riddles in the Mahabharata.
Reaching it is delightfully easy: a short, scenic trek of about two and a half kilometres climbs from Sari through forest and meadow to the lakeshore, gaining just enough height to feel like a real Himalayan ascent without demanding serious effort. This accessibility has made it a beloved first trek and a favourite weekend camp.
Camping overnight at the lake is the way to experience it fully — to wake before dawn, watch the mist lift off the water and the peaks catch fire in the reflection, and feel the deep quiet of the high mountains. Set on the route to Chopta and Tungnath, Deoria Tal is often woven into a longer Garhwal trekking circuit.
