About Nainital
Nainital is the most celebrated hill station in Kumaon, built around the emerald, eye-shaped Naini Lake from which it takes its name. Discovered by the British in 1841, it quickly became a beloved summer retreat, and its tiered houses, churches and the bustling Mall Road along the water's edge still carry a distinct colonial charm.
At the heart of the town stands the revered Naina Devi temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, said to mark where the eyes (naina) of the goddess Sati fell — giving the lake and the town their sacred significance. Boating on the lake, in the iconic flat-bottomed yacht-boats, is the quintessential Nainital experience.
Ringed by seven hills, the town offers a wealth of viewpoints reached on foot, by pony or by cable car — Snow View, Tiffin Top, Naina Peak and the Himalaya-facing Kilbury road — along with bazaars, eateries and a lively holiday buzz. As the hub of Kumaon's lake district, it connects easily to Bhimtal, Sattal, Naukuchiatal and the birding forests of Pangot.
