About Uttarkashi
Set on the banks of the Bhagirathi river, Uttarkashi — literally the 'Kashi of the North' — is one of Garhwal's most sacred towns, often likened to Varanasi for its riverside ghats, ancient temples and deep spiritual atmosphere. At its heart stands the revered Vishwanath temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, alongside the unusual Shakti temple that houses a giant trident said to be centuries old.
The town is also the principal base and last major halt on the road to Gangotri, making it a busy waypoint during the Char Dham season, where pilgrims rest, stock up and prepare for the higher mountains ahead. Its bazaars, riverside aartis and temples give it a lively yet devotional character.
Beyond pilgrimage, Uttarkashi is a hub for adventure and mountaineering — home to the renowned Nehru Institute of Mountaineering — and the starting point for some of Garhwal's loveliest treks, including the meadow of Dayara Bugyal and the lake of Dodital. This blend of faith, frontier energy and high-mountain adventure gives the town a distinctive appeal.
