About Kausani
Kausani is a narrow ridge village above the Someshwar Valley, renowned for one of the most extraordinary Himalayan panoramas accessible in India. Gandhi called it the 'Switzerland of India' after a 12-day stay in 1929. On a clear morning, an 80 km arc from Kedarnath to Panchachuli fills the entire northern horizon. The Anasakti Ashram, organic tea gardens, and the nearby Baijnath temple complex add considerable cultural depth.
Places to See
• Sunrise Himalayan Panorama (80 km arc of peaks — Trishul, Nanda Devi, Panchachuli, Kedarnath)
• Anasakti Ashram (Gandhi's 1929 retreat, museum)
• Sumitranandan Pant Gallery (Hindi poet's manuscripts)
• Kausani Tea Garden (Solig Organic Tea, tasting and guided tour)
• Baijnath Temple Complex (12th century Nagara temples, 17 km)
• Rudradhari Falls and Cave Temple (12 km forest waterfall)
• Gwaldam (36 km, lake and Trishul views)
Best Time
February–April (best window — winter clarity, snow glowing at sunrise). September–October (post-monsoon sharpness). October is the single finest month. Avoid July–August (clouds block views all day).
How to Reach
Rail: Kathgodam (132 km). Air: Pantnagar (149 km). Road: Kathgodam → Almora → Kausani (130 km, ~4.5 hrs). Buses from Almora (53 km, 2 hrs).
Things to Do
• Sunrise panorama with binoculars
• Anasakti Ashram Gandhi's room

Tips
Book an east-facing room with unobstructed Himalayan view — this is the primary purpose of the visit. Only 5–6 quality guesthouses — book 4–6 weeks ahead in October. Binoculars are essential. Pair with Baijnath and Bageshwar for a 3-night Kumaon circuit.
