About Chaukori
Chaukori at 2,010 m in Pithoragarh district is a small, largely undiscovered hill station on a ridge with extraordinary views of the Panchachuli group (up to 6,904 m) and the Nanda Devi range. The surrounding area has two excellent tea gardens and the KMVN Tourist Rest House here is one of the finest-positioned rest houses in all of Kumaon. The nearby Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave Temple (30 km) is one of Kumaon's most extraordinary hidden heritage sites.
Places to See
• Panchachuli Sunrise Panorama (from the KMVN rest house lawn at 5 AM — the primary experience)
• Chaukori Tea Garden (1.5 km, guided tours and tasting)
• Kapkote Tea Garden (9 km, organic tea estate)
• Berinag (10 km, oldest tea growing area in Kumaon)
• Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave Temple (30 km, extraordinary limestone cave — see Pilgrimage section)
• Nakuleshwar Temple (hilltop, 2 km, Himalayan views)
Best Time
February–June (best views, tea gardens in flush). September–November (post-monsoon clarity, dramatic snow on Panchachuli). December–February (cold, light snowfall, very peaceful). Avoid July–August.
How to Reach
Road: Kathgodam → Almora → Bageshwar → Chaukori (190 km, ~7 hrs). No direct buses — hire cab from Almora or Pithoragarh.
